Near the Coquitlam River, overlooking the bog and mountains.

September 29, 2023 Jim Roche

The Coquitlam River is just 30 minutes from my house. On one side of the river re the mountains, and on the other is a large bog. Most of the area is flat, but small pathways of dirt criss-cross the bog, until finally it meets the cranberry fields were everything becomes uniform. Looking out from behind the brush it doesn’t seem possible there could be any order out there.

Summer Has Ended, Even in the Window.

September 24, 2023 Jim Roche

Summer has ended, even in the window. Slowly the artificial lights, which are more yellow and red, seem to be the predominant colour. Some plants dies away, no matter how much light we give them. Other seem to stop for the next three months and just wait things out. Some plants seem to be unaffected. Lately I am looking more and more towards small images to take here in the studio.

Near The Wire Fence in the Forest.

September 22, 2023 Jim Roche

There is a wire fence in the forest, I suppose it is to keep you away from the edge of the river, and away from the protected areas of the forest. Here the light barely comes through. Still, things grow, sometimes smaller and slower than you would expect. But they grow.

Gardeners begin packing for the Winter.

September 5, 2023 Jim Roche

The gardeners are just starting to clear out the gardens, some are packing their tools and collecting the sticks, strings, ropes and plastic covers hey used during the summer growth. Things will soon change completely.

Chicken Coop Number 4

September 2, 2023 Jim Roche

On what appears to be some form of government land there are a series of old chicken coops, over the past three years they have become more and more overgrown. A nearby house, also abandoned, was perhaps a caretakers house not too long ago. Now there is some farming, but the roads are all gated now. Three hundred feet or so away is the Pacific Ocean, this is right where the Fraser River flows into the Pacific. According to maps this land was under water 100 years ago, then a dike was built and a landing for boats.

In the early morning rain.

August 30, 2023 Jim Roche

I woke realising it was raining still, and it was early. I had passed by this little street that oddly enters a public park and abruptly ends. The light bluish paint on the last garage was waiting for the right light, and I knew it would come. Only 30 mins, there and back, but I am oddly happy with the image. It seems to say something quiet about summer, and early morning rain.

In the Forest at Sunrise.

August 27, 2023 Jim Roche

Early this morning, right at day break, I returned to the small woodland at the delta of the Fraser River on the Pacific Coast. Some trees had recently fallen from the parameter of the woodland and light was streaming in where I have never seen it. Where five years ago there had been a Sturt of growth of vines and seedlings, all of those were gone. They had dried out, and crumbled to the ground. I wonder what happened then that brought about a change inside the dark forest, and why it has stopped.
