Morning Light in Mr. Lee's Garden

September 22, 2024 Jim Roche

Mr. Lee has shared his garden with me for the past few years. Hidden behind a fence it is a remarkable green space with an abundance of vegetables he cares for. Across the alley way you can see his tall bamboo trees growing from pots on a rooftop. This year he has a squash that at least 6 feet tall. He’s always happy when I come by, opening up the garden and then leaving me to work with my camera.

The Garden Hose

July 9, 2024 Jim Roche

Today was over 115 degrees F, at times up to 121. It was so bright I had difficulty seeing what was in front of me. Still, in the garden, there were quiet, cooler green spaces where a breeze and some shade made a difference. These gardens present as natural dioramas, carefully planted to signal random growth and development….but there is nothing natural about them. You still feel the hidden hand behind the scene. And occasionally, when a water pipe, hose, or small sign enters the Fram you realize things are not as they appear.

A Beak in the Clouds

December 26, 2023 Jim Roche

For several days, including Christmas Day, the Skys have been full of dark rain clouds. Only seldom is there a break. The man made structures in the garden often begin to glow when there is a break in the clouds. Sometimes their entire contents are visible.

The gardeners are just starting to clear out the gardens, some are packing their tools and collecting the sticks, strings, ropes and plastic covers hey used during the summer growth. Things will soon change completely.

Chicken Coop Number 4

September 2, 2023 Jim Roche

On what appears to be some form of government land there are a series of old chicken coops, over the past three years they have become more and more overgrown. A nearby house, also abandoned, was perhaps a caretakers house not too long ago. Now there is some farming, but the roads are all gated now. Three hundred feet or so away is the Pacific Ocean, this is right where the Fraser River flows into the Pacific. According to maps this land was under water 100 years ago, then a dike was built and a landing for boats.
